What is the difference between a flogger, a paddle, a crop and a cane?

Each tool produces a distinct sensation and suits different styles of play. A flogger has multiple falls (tails) that spread impact across a wider area, making it versatile for both warm-up and more intense play depending on the material. A paddle delivers a broad, firm strike with consistent thud or sting depending on its thickness and material. A riding crop has a small, stiff tip that focuses sensation precisely, making it popular for teasing as well as striking. A cane is the most intense option in most collections, producing a sharp, narrow sting that requires careful aim and is generally better suited to more experienced players.

I am completely new to impact play. Where should I start?

A lightweight paddle or a soft suede flogger is widely recommended for beginners. Both are forgiving in terms of control, deliver sensations that are easy to dial up gradually, and give both partners a chance to learn what feels good before exploring more intense tools. Starting with shorter, lighter implements also makes it easier to aim accurately and avoid sensitive areas. Always discuss boundaries and establish a safeword before your first session, and begin with much lighter strikes than you think you need.

Are there areas of the body I should avoid during impact play?

Yes. As a general safety guideline, avoid striking the spine, tailbone, kidneys (lower back), the back of the knees, joints, the neck and the head. The safest target zones are the fleshy, well-padded areas such as the buttocks, the upper back (away from the spine) and the upper thighs. If you are new to a particular implement, practise your aim on a pillow before a scene so you have a feel for how it lands.

How do I clean and care for impact play toys?

Care depends on the material. Wood: wipe down with a damp cloth and a mild soap solution, then dry thoroughly to prevent warping. Leather and suede: wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth after use, allow to air-dry fully, and condition leather periodically to keep it supple. Suede falls on floggers can be refreshed with a soft brush. Synthetic and PU leather: these are non-porous and can be wiped with a toy-safe antibacterial cleaner or a mild soap and water solution. Store all impact toys away from direct sunlight and heat, which can dry out and crack leather over time.
