Are menstrual cups safe to use internally?

Yes, when made from body-safe materials. Look for cups certified as medical-grade silicone, natural rubber latex, or medical-grade TPE. These materials are non-porous, meaning they do not harbour bacteria, and they are free from BPA, phthalates, and other harmful chemicals. Always check the product description for material certifications before purchasing.

How do I know which size is right for me?

Most menstrual cup brands use two main sizing guides:

  • Flow volume: A higher-capacity cup suits a heavier flow. Check the millilitre rating on each product, as cups typically hold between 15 ml and 40 ml.
  • Anatomy and life stage: Smaller sizes are generally recommended for those who have not given birth vaginally. Larger sizes tend to fit more comfortably after vaginal childbirth. Cervix height also matters: measure yours before buying to match cup length to your body.

If you are between sizes or unsure, many brands publish detailed sizing guides on their packaging or websites.

How do I clean and care for my menstrual cup?

Rinse your cup with cold water first to prevent staining, then wash with warm water and a fragrance-free, oil-free soap. During your cycle, empty and rinse every four to twelve hours depending on your flow. At the end of each cycle, sterilise the cup by boiling it in water for five to eight minutes or using a dedicated cup steriliser. Store it in a breathable cotton bag, never an airtight container, to keep it fresh between uses.

Can I use lubricant to help with insertion?

A small amount of water-based lubricant on the rim of the cup can make insertion much easier, especially when you are new to using one. Avoid silicone-based lubricants with silicone cups, as they can degrade the material over time. Oil-based lubricants are also best avoided as they can compromise the cup and disrupt vaginal pH balance.

Will my order be delivered discreetly?

Yes. All orders from The Sex Shed are shipped in plain, unmarked packaging with no indication of the contents on the outside. The billing descriptor on your bank statement is also discreet. If you have any specific concerns about packaging or delivery, feel free to contact our customer care team before placing your order.
