Water-based and silicone-based lubricants are both fully compatible with latex and polyisoprene condoms and dental dams. Oil-based lubricants, including coconut oil or petroleum-based products, should never be used with latex barriers as they weaken the material and can cause it to break. Can I use lubricant for anal play, and are there special considerations?

Yes, and lubricant is especially important for anal play because the body does not produce its own natural lubrication in that area. A thicker, longer-lasting formula such as a silicone-based or gel-style water-based lube is generally recommended for added comfort and reduced friction. Silicone-based lubricants require soap and warm water to break them down fully and can be more stubborn on fabric, so laying down a dedicated play sheet or towel is worth considering. Oil-based lubricants are the most likely to stain and the hardest to remove from materials, so extra care is needed if you choose those.
