What is the difference between a thigh harness, a hand harness and a body harness?

A hand harness encases the hand and wrist, offering a more sculptural and secure form of restraint than a simple wrist cuff. A body harness covers a larger area of the torso, creating a striking aesthetic while also providing attachment points for other restraints or for use in suspension with appropriate rigging knowledge.

How do I make sure a harness fits safely?

Always measure the body part the harness will sit on before ordering, using a soft tape measure. For thigh harnesses, measure the circumference of your thigh at its widest point. For hand harnesses, measure around the knuckles with your hand flat. Choose a style with multiple adjustment points so you can fine-tune the fit. Once on, you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably underneath any strap. Check regularly during a scene that circulation is not restricted and remove the harness immediately if you notice tingling, numbness or colour changes in the skin.

Are these harnesses safe to use for suspension bondage?

Not all harnesses are rated for suspension. Suspension places significant load on the body and the hardware, and requires specialist rigging knowledge, appropriate anchor points, and a spotter. Only attempt suspension with equipment that is explicitly described as suspension-safe by the manufacturer, and invest time in learning proper technique before you try. If you are new to bondage, start with floor-based positional play and work up gradually.

What materials are most body-safe for harnesses worn against skin?

Look for harnesses made from materials that are free from phthalates and other harmful plasticisers. Nylon webbing, genuine leather, and quality faux leather are all widely considered body-safe when sourced responsibly. If you have sensitive skin or known latex allergies, avoid any product containing latex and choose smooth nylon or leather alternatives. Metal hardware such as buckles and D-rings should be zinc alloy or stainless steel to minimise the risk of skin reactions.

How do I clean and care for my harness?

The cleaning method depends on the material. Nylon and synthetic harnesses can generally be wiped down with a toy-safe antibacterial cleaner or mild soap and warm water, then left to air dry fully before storage. Genuine leather should be cleaned with a dedicated leather cleaner, dried naturally away from direct heat, and conditioned periodically to keep it supple and prevent cracking. Metal hardware can be wiped with a damp cloth and dried thoroughly to prevent tarnishing.
