When I first heard about vulva pumping, I must admit I felt a little scared by the idea. The thought of placing a suction cup over my pussy and having my vulva pumped didn’t thrill me.
However, as an intrepid kinkster I decided to give it a go, and I’m so glad I did. That’s why I’m sharing my vulva pumping guide: everything you need to know about pussy pumps.
How do vulva pumps work?
As first glance the vulva (or pussy) pump looks a bit like an oxygen mask attached to a long tube. At one end there’s a cover or cup that fits over the pussy, and at the other is the pump (sometimes in the shape of a bulb and sometimes in the form of a trigger). The cover and pump are joined together by a flexible hose.
The pumping mechanism causes suction and this pulls air from the cup. This creates a vacuum which draws in the soft tissue of the genital area, boosting blood flow and sensitivity.

I found the sensation odd at first, with the cup pulling my flesh and the pressure on my pussy increasing. The suction caused my clit and labia to puff up - which felt strange, but surprisingly pleasant.

As I relaxed into it, I felt a welcoming warmth spread across the breadth of my vagina, and I felt myself yearning for more pussy attention.
The pumping and pressure go hand in hand and as the air released my pussy began to tingle as the sensation started to return.
I found the whole thing very stimulating, so I shared my experience with friends - and received a favorable response. It turned out others had tried vulva pumping and they quite liked it too.
From the drag of the suction to watching their genitals puff up, there were a few different pleasurable elements at play.
Exploring different types of vulva pumps
Keen to expand my knowledge of vulva pumps I decided to find out more about these delightful devices.
I discovered there are two types - pussy (or vulva) pumps similar to the one I tried and clitoral pumps. Vulva pumps cover the outer labia and clit pumps are used to tease the clitoris and nipples.

If you take the time to browse, you’ll find a range of sizes, shapes and designs. Different pumps provide different experiences, for instance you could go for a pump with a sturdy acrylic cup designed to provide unremitting and intense suction. Or perhaps you’d prefer a vibrating pump that combines suction with vibrations.

There are manual pumps that are operated by hand (via a bulb or trigger) and automatic pumps - flip the switch and the pump does the rest. With their mechanical capabilities, automatic pumps are less effort, but you might find it trickier to control the pace and pressure.
You’ll also need to check if your automatic pump is battery operated, if it’s rechargeable, or if you need access to a power source to use it.
All quality vulva pumps have a quick release valve enabling you to discharge the air pressure. The quick release is usually in the form of a lever or button and it disrupts the suction, allowing you to remove the pump quickly.
How to use a vulva pump?
Solo pumping
The first time can be nerve-wracking, but take your time and get to know your pussy pump by testing it on your inner thigh or arm first. This allows you to get a feel for pressure and pace and practice using the quick release button or lever.
Pumps tend to work well on skin that’s smooth, so if you have a crop of pubic hair growing on your pussy you might need to trim that bush.
When you’re ready to play find a private, comfortable space and get things going by stroking and massaging your pussy, paying attention to the labia and clit. Being aroused will make things simpler, allowing you to attach the pump with ease.
Lube helps too so I always apply a liberal amount of good quality water-based lubricant to the cup before it’s attached. I find this helps to keep the cup in place, and helps provide a tight seal.

That said, getting a tight seal can be challenging at first and you may have to change position and manually maneuver the cup to find a comfortable fit.
Once you’re sorted you can slowly start to pump. Don’t be tempted to ramp things up too quickly as if you go too fast you might pinch your flesh and bruise your skin.
Pumping should feel pleasurable, so if things get uncomfortable don’t be afraid to halt the play. There’s no need for continuous pumping, it’s not a race, so you can always stop and just soak up the pressure.
If it’s still too much release the pressure with the quick release valve and take a break.

Pumping with a partner
Using a vulva pump with a partner can turn the experience from solo exploration into an incredibly intimate and playful shared activity. Start with open communication: talk beforehand about what each of you wants, set clear boundaries, and agree on a safe word or signal to pause or stop at any moment.
Your partner can take control of the pumping, gradually building pressure while watching your reactions, which adds a thrilling element of anticipation and power exchange. They can also tease you with light touches, kisses, or vibrations around the cup, or gently massage the swollen area after release for heightened sensitivity. Many people find the visual of their partner’s aroused, plump vulva incredibly hot, so incorporate plenty of eye contact and verbal feedback.
Always go slow together, check in often, and prioritize comfort over intensity. With trust and good communication, partner play can make vulva pumping even more exciting and connective.
